Tuition

I currently offer a regular weekly improving beginners' class in St. John's, and can also conduct one-off workshops at any level for groups of up to twenty people (see details below). Please contact me if you would like more information about my classes, or to make arrangements for a workshop. Some feedback from participants in my classes and workshops is included below.

Regular classes

My weekly class is held on Thursdays from 7.30-9pm in the fourth floor rehearsal room of the St. John's Arts & Culture Centre on Prince Philip Drive. Fees are $5 per class. No special footwear is required. Wear hard-soled shoes with a small heel (no tap shoes please), and bring a bottle of water.

Please contact me in advance if you plan to attend, or for more information. Classes for the Winter 2009 semester are now underway, but it may still be possible to accommodate new members with some prior dance experience.

I plan to start a new weekly beginners' class in St. John's in January 2010. If you are interested in joining this class, please let me know and I will send you further details nearer the time.

Workshops

I can conduct workshops at any level for groups of up to twenty people. Participants are introduced to the art of "making music with the feet," learning some of the steps that form the basis of the traditional Scottish step dance repertoire.

The atmosphere in my workshops is relaxed and informal, with an emphasis on enjoying ourselves and the music. Live musical accompaniment is provided wherever possible. No prior dance experience or special footwear is required.

Please contact me for more information, or to make a booking.

Past workshops

2008

North Atlantic Fiddle Convention 2008, St. John's, Newfoundland, 7 August. Workshop title: "Scottish step dance for beginners." Accompanied by fiddler Evelyn Osborne.

  • "Joy is an amazing dancer and I am so happy that she has decided to share her talent with others. I have attended all of her classes and each one is more fun than the last. Joy has a great sense of humour and a lot of patience, she is a great teacher and I find it easy to learn from her. I highly recommend Joy as a dance instructor."
  • "Joy’s a great teacher! She’s enthusiastic, patient, and she breaks down the dancing into easy to learn steps."
